Holiday Details

To admire the pristine beauty of Mother Nature and to spend some peaceful time, plan a trip to the Northeast. Admire the scenic landscapes on the way to Shillong. Numerous historic and natural sites in Shillong are sure to leave you spellbound. One trip is not enough to enjoy all the attractions this place has to offer.

Shillong, the capital of the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya, is a small city with a population of less than 150,000 people. According to local Khasi legend, it is named after a boy called 'Shyllong', who was born to a virgin mother in a nearby village. The boy grew up to become a handsome young man and became revered local deity. Located at an elevation of 1,496 m, its pleasant weather categorizes the town as a hill station. Situated in a plateau, Shillong is surrounded by hills, three of which Lum Sohpetbneng, Lum Diengiei and Lum Shillong are revered by the Khasi community. Because of these rolling hills, the British called it the Scotland of the East. In fact in 1874, when Assam was first created as a Province under a Chief Commissioner, Shillong became the headquarters of the administration on account of its pleasant weather which the British civil servants liked. After independence it remained the capital of undivided Assam till 1972, when Meghalaya was carved out into a separate state, and Assam moved its capital to Guwahati.
